Things To Do
Today, the Au Gres River and Saginaw Bay are known as a fisherman’s paradise. Au Gres is known as the “Perch Capitol of Michigan”. Perch can be caught year round in both the river and the bay.
Walleye is also found in the Au Gres area. There are annual fishing tournaments hosted in Au Gres for both walleye and bass. Access to the river and bay is provided by a state-owned launch facility at the river mouth.
Those who prefer to fish from shore will find access along the pier heads at the state-owned launching facility. On the East Branch of the Au Gres River is the Singing Bridge. A public site there allows shore access for fishermen. The Au Gres River has a DNA Harbor of Refuge and the Au Gres City Park and Campground right on the river!
Summer activities include a walleye tournament and a Venetian Festival, featuring an after dark lighted boat parade. In season, mushrooms and wild berries abound in the nearby state forests; hunting of many species of animals in season – from ducks to bucks – is also a popular pastime.

The Arenac County Park & Beach is located off of Rumsey Road in Au Gres. This facility includes cabins available for rent along with day-use Park with picnic tables, grills, volleyball, horseshoes and 900’ of sandy beach front. County Park which requires entry fee: $3 daily pass to walk or bike in, $5 daily pass per car county resident, $7 daily pass per car non-county resident, $30 season pass per car (includes admission to Oasis Lake Park, also in Arenac County). Au Gres City Park along the Au Gres River
Arenac County Historical Society Museum has artifacts dating back to the 1800’s, a home setting, with a parlor and children’s rooms, items pertaining to indians, and lumbering in Arenac county, farming, and schools. Hours are Memorial Day – Labor Day: Saturday & Sunday, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. For group tours at other times call 989-876-7029.
